Maui at Dusk

Maui at Dusk

Maui at Dusk

Here’s another pastel sunset I did.

This one took forever to do.  I only started painting in 2012, and I’ve only been doing anything realistic for about six months.  So there are a lot of lessons for me to learn.  Like perspective, colors of objects close and colors of objects far away.  The further away, the lighter is the rule.  This doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s true.  I went outside and looked.

I have been using reference images, to help me with my landscapes.  However, in this piece, I took a giant leap forward and used a first image, then added the palm trees and ocean in on my own.  So I feel like I’m making progress.

I want to eventually paint in a way that is unique to me.  I want people to look at my work and recognize my style.  Like, “ah, ha, a Mitchell.”  Ha ha ha.  But I know from prior experience that if I just work at this, show up and stay positive, it will happen.

I want to thank everyone who is reading my blog and liking my art work.  It really means a lot to me.

I also wish I were in Maui right now, and also think you captured what I have seen there. I like the boat in this one, too!

Thanks, Trisha. That is wonderful to know I captured Maui. I go there every year, and love it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I’ve never really done any realistic art, so this is a huge step for me.

So I am just understanding this type of art and being nosy. Do you put parts on pre done and paint around or is this all hand drawn and painted by yourself? X

I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking. I do all the drawing myself. I use a reference image(s) for ideas and to get the shapes right and the leaves where they belong, etc. I do work on layers as I paint. Like in this one, each cloud was on a layer, each trunk of the palm was on a layer and then the palms were on their own layers. Did I answer your question? If not, let me know.

Thank you it’s hard when you don’t have the painting jnfront of you to touch and see properly without a screen being in the way. I wasn’t sure whether it was a painting where it was something else and you added to it etc the tree one is simply stunning very clever and I think the fish one of my favs purely because of the stunning colours!

Thank you so much for your compliments. It is really nice to hear you like those pieces. One can scan in art work and work further on it in the computer. Also, a lot of people take their computer art and add acrylic or oils to it.

That’s wonderful. Are you going to post the sketch? When I started this blog, my intention was that I wanted to help or inspire someone. Yeah, I did!
