No Dairy for Kerry

22-A

22-A

I recently went to see a new internist.  With all my negative experiences over the years with doctors, I expected only the worst.  My plan was to just get anyone as a new internist, as the present one was in his 70’s and his wait times were hideous, like more than two hours.

I arrived on time for the appointment, and the doctor was running on time.  That was good after the last guy.

She took 40 minutes for my first appointment.  She got a complete history of all the various things that are wrong with me.  She advised that since I have fibromyalgia, my body was inflamed.  Yeah, OK, I know that.  Then she says, “therefore, you shouldn’t eat dairy, as it further inflames the body.”  OMG.  A doctor discussing health and nutrition.  That’s an oxymoron.  Doctors usually know nothing about nutrition.

She went on to say that I should change my diet to vegan or modified vegan, that is allowing some chicken and fish, depending on where they come from.

She further told me to watch a movie called Forks Over Knives.  I highly recommend this movie.  It gives the scientific reasons why one should consider a vegan diet.  Basically the science shows that diets high in animal protein cause cancer.

I was totally blown away by this doctor.

My husband and I left her office and headed for our favorite Italian restaurant in downtown Seattle.  Oh, oh.  Italian, cheese, dairy.

OK, I want to feel better.  So I found something without cheese.  That means that I can no longer have the four cheese penne dish that I loved so much.

We discussed what the doctor had told me, and I made a decision to at least try what she suggested.

I have been 85% to 90% off dairy for two months.  My life has changed drastically.

I have way more energy.  Way more.  The brain fog has cleared.  It hasn’t gone away, but I can function better.  I sleep better.  I had woken up in the night and stayed awake for several hours off and on.  That rarely ever happens anymore.  My feet are numb, the numbness got better.  Before going off dairy, I had profuse sweating during the day.  I had a bit of pain, but it quickly resolved.

The worst thing that had bothered me was that my nose ran constantly.  It was hideous.  It was like a water faucet.  That is 90% better.

This doctor also advised me to give up caffeine, as it inflames the body.  I’m working on that.  The headaches are horrid.

This has not been easy.  But I did it. I did it slowly, but with deliberation.  I became willing to be willing (to be willing, to be willing, etc.)  I showed up, and God stepped in and helped me with opportunities and giving me the strength to change.

If you have read some of my earlier posts, you know that I believe that when a person is ready, the Universe/God is there to help.  Things have just fallen into place.  Non-dairy yogurt appeared, then I decided to switch to gluten-free oatmeal.  It appeared.  I was eating cheese and fruit for a snack twice a day.  hummus and vegetables are now my snack.

Some of my friends were worried I was doing too much too fast and it would cause me to have a fibro flare.  But that didn’t happen.  I did what I was comfortable with.  I didn’t push.  I showed an eagerness to try, and things just fell into place.  Thank you God!

Now the next thing I’m working on is exercise.  That’s another blog.

The art for this post is an abstract that I enhanced before cropping.

I am so happy that going off of dairy and coffee has helped you! I also found a tremendous difference in many symptoms and problems by going off of dairy (I drink a cup or less of coffee per day, and my doctor prescribes something with a small amount of caffeine in it).

I love your blogs and the straightforward way you express yourself. I can relate to much of what you write.

You know I love your art, and keep up the blogs when you can. They are really good, Kerry.

Hi Leigh, Thanks again for your supportive comments. You are a special person in my life. I’m still struggling with getting off coffee. I am down to two to three mouthfuls. Any less, headaches come around in the afternoon. I hadn’t thought of checking the ingredients in the drugs I take. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for following me. I am still eating a bit of dairy because I try to limit chicken and fish as much as possible. So I’m having to find alternatives other than chicken and fish for mac & cheese, lasagna, etc. Good luck if you give no dairy a try. I am going slow so I don’t stress myself.

I don’t have kids, so meals are pretty easy. I feel so much better since giving up dairy, that it makes it easy to deal with any hassle.

What I’m finding is I’m going slowly. I started by eliminating my two snacks a day with cheese and fruit. Instead I am eating vegetables and hummus. Then I changed from yogurt in the morning to gluten-free oatmeal. That eliminated most of the dairy. Now I’m working on dinner. I still eat some meals with cheese because I try to stay away from meat, chicken and fish. I’m doing baby steps now.

Sounds good and what milk do you use? Are you going by a diet book for help? X

I don’t drink milk. After I left home at 18, I never had milk again. I think that’s a clue that I am allergic to dairy. It gave me a lot of mucus in my throat. I’ve just kind of wandered around on the web looking at things. I also posted in Facebook that I was going to no dairy and asked for help. There is coconut milk that many say is very good.

I liked your comment about how people resist giving up what will make them feel better. It is so true. They would muh rather be in pain that give up X. Way to go on sticking to it!

Hi Pepper, It is amazing what we hang on to. I try to be careful not to do that. I was initially sad about giving up dairy. But now I feel so good, I don’t miss it.

How amazing that you got nutrition advice from a doctor! (And how sad that it’s surprising) I’m glad you.’re feeling such relief from going dairy-free. I noticed a huge improvement in mental clarity after cutting out dairy. Now when I slip up and eat it, I notice my sensory processing issues get much worse. I need to work on the caffeine thing though. I enjoy a cup of tea in the morning and it’s hard to give that up.

Hi Trisha, I hear you on the caffeine. I really want to give up my one cup of morning coffee, but then I get headaches. I’m down to three mouthfuls. If I go any lower, I get the headaches. So for now, it’s three mouthfuls.

Yes…it was a long journey, but worth it. Do not be afraid to keep a food diary and remove foods you suspect bother you. I was so resistant to giving up the legumes. I love peanut butter and in Tampa, black beans and rice are a staple. And all of the experts say they are HEALTHY! But after my third time giving them up for 2 weeks and then adding them back in and the painful, stiff hands and knees, I finally gave them the permanent heave ho! My mind wants them, but my body says no.

Hi Sharron, Isn’t it funny that we resist giving up what will make us feel better? I am totally like that. But now, having given up dairy and seen the results, I absolutely do not mind losing it.

So glad the dietary changes are helping you! I have a Phd in Holistic Nutrition because I studied for years to try to figure out how to heal myself. I went ahead and got the degree while I ws at it. Turns out everything I “thought” was good for my body was damaging me. I went vegan/vegetarian/raw foodist…tried all of those and they all just made me SICKER. A zillion tests later and I learned I have Celiac disease (no wheat, rye, barley or oats…even GF oats make me sick), I have hereditary fructose intolerance (I cannot eat fruit and have to stick with low sugar veggies), I am allergic to legumes (beans and peanuts) they give me arthritis…..I have to go light on the nuts and all aged foods (migraines)….the best diet for me is the freshest organic meats, eggs, organic dairy (non aged), and low sugar veggies. Kinda like what my Great Grandparents ate…..they made into their 90’s and one went to 102. Go figure.

As far as food allergies, I had blood tests done in the 1980’s. But I am quite sure I need to have those done again. As far as the dairy, my new doctor told me it was inflaming my body and making the inflammation from fibro worse.
